PERSPECTIVES OF CLOSER LITHUANIAN-LATVIAN COOPERATION WERE DISCUSSED

On 19 July Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with Latvian Group for Interparliamentary relations with Lithuania and its Chairman Sarmite Kirkuste, who are on a visit to Lithuania, and discussed possibilities of bilateral cooperation with a view to offer the inhabitants of both countries more opportunities to get acquainted with social and political  life of their neighbours.

The participants of the meeting also addressed other important bilateral issues – further activities of Lithuanian-Latvian Forum established last year and preparations for its convention that should take place in September in Riga. Relations with neighbours, European future and the Constitutional Treaty were also touched upon.

The guests were interested in how Lithuania maintains links with its citizens working abroad. The participants of the discussion agreed that further active dialogue between the Parliaments, Government institutions and societies of both countries is necessary, in order to join efforts and strive for important goals.
