PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LITHUANIA TO THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE SIGNS THE CONVENTION FOR THE PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES

On 8 December, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Council of Europe Gediminas Šerkšnys and Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio signed the European Convention for the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.

This Convention provides for three following means to reach a peaceful settlement of disputes: to submit disputes to the judgment of the International Court of Justice, to refer disputes to a Permanent Conciliation Commission or to submit all disputes to arbitration.

All the parties to the Convention recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice to settle all possible international legal disputes between them, including disputes relating to the interpretation of a treaty or any question of international law; the existence of any fact which, if established, would constitute a breach of an international obligation; and the nature or extent of the reparation to be made for the breach of an international obligation.

After becoming a party to the Convention, Lithuania would be able to submit international disputes which may arise with any other party to the Convention to the judgment of the International Court of Justice without requesting for the other party’s consent.

The Convention will come into force after its ratification by the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania.
