PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LITHUANIA PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

On 15 November, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the European Union Raimundas Karoblis met with President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and presented credential letters to him. Following the ceremony, Ambassador R.Karoblis and President J.M.Barroso discussed issues of European energy policy and the EU budget for 2011, as well as financial crisis management mechanism.

Ambassador R.Karoblis thanked the European Commission for the support to the energy infrastructure development, especially the Baltic interconnection plan and the project of the new Visaginas nuclear power plant.

The Ambassador stressed that Lithuania would actively contribute to the initiatives of the European Commission regarding the implementation of the strategy Energy 2020 and energy infrastructure development.

Ambassador R.Karoblis and President J.M.Barroso stressed that it was import to adopt EU draft budget for 2011 and the EU’s ambitious new financial perspective, which would be beneficial for the EU’s sustainable economic development.

At the meeting, the Lithuanian diplomat and the President of the European Commission also agreed on the significance of an intensive cooperation during Lithuania’s preparation for the EU Presidency in 2013.

Ambassador R.Karoblis was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the EU on 4 October.
