OSCE CHAIRPERSON TO VISIT UKRAINE, MOLDOVA, DISCUSS OSCE WORK, PROTRACTED CONFLICTS

VILNIUS, 4 February 2011 – The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis, will travel to Ukraine and Moldova next week to meet with leaders and discuss OSCE work in the countries and efforts to resolve protracted conflicts.

A.Ažubalis will be in Ukraine from 6 to 8 February. His agenda includes meetings with President Viktor Yanukovich, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn as well as with representatives of political parties and civil society. Ukraine's preparations for the 2013 OSCE Chairmanship and the OSCE's work in Ukraine are among topics to be discussed.

A news conference with A.Ažubalis and Gryshchenko is planned for 11:15 on 7 February at the Foreign Ministry in Kyiv.

On 8 February, A.Ažubalis will travel to Moldova, where he will discuss efforts to bring progress to the Transdniestrian settlement process and other topics. Achieving tangible progress on protracted conflicts is one of the priorities of the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship. A.Ažubalis will meet Acting President/Parliamentary Speaker Marian Lupu, Prime Minster Vlad Filat, Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca and the Moldovan chief negotiator, Deputy Prime Minister Eugen Carpov as well as representatives of political parties. He is also expected to meet the leadership of Transdniestria. In addition, a meeting with civil society representatives is on the agenda.

A news conference with A.Ažubalis is planned for 10:30 on 9 February at the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
