Opening of Israeli Embassy in Lithuania marks a significant stage in our relations, says Minister L.Linkevičius

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius  in the meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman in Vilnius on September 10 discussed successful bilateral political, economic and cultural relations, new perspective fields for cooperation and the partnership in international organisations. Linas Linkevičius also welcomed the decision of the Government of Israel to open an Embassy in Vilnius.

“The opening of the Embassy marks a significant stage in the relations between Lithuania and Israel, special friendship between our countries”, said Linas Linkevičius.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel underlined that Lithuanian’s relations with Israel are on the highest level in our history.

Minister L. Linkevičius welcomed the growing trade turnover between the countries, the two-fold increase of tourists from Israel, enhanced cooperation in scientific research and expressed the hope for more Israeli investments.

Representatives from about 140 companies and research institutions of Israel are taking part in the international forum Life Sciences Baltics 2014 held in Vilnius on 10-12 September. Israel has a well developed high tech industry and cooperates actively in developing bilateral projects with Lithuanian companies in this field.

During the meeting much attention was devoted to the Middle East Peace Process, the situation in the region, and in Ukraine.

Linas Linkevičius noted that after ceasefire in Gaza was reached, achieving stability, continuation of dialogue and the negotiation process in Cairo on all remaining issues are the main priorities. Lithuanian Minister conveyed a common position of the European Union on the Middle East Peace Process – the aspiration for the two-state solution, that in the future the two states – Israel and Palestine – should peacefully coexist.

Avigdor Liberman came to Lithuania on a reciprocal visit following Lithuania’s Foreign Minister’s visit to Israel in May 2013. This has been Avigdor Liberman’s, as Israeli Foreign Minister, third visit to Lithuania since 2010.
