OIL-DRILLING IN D-6 DEPOSIT SHOULD NOT START UNTILL ITS EFFECTS TO ENVIRONMENT ARE ASSESSED

On 3 November, experts from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Bernd von Droste-Hulshoff and Fumiko Ohinata met with President of the Republic of Lithuania Rolandas Paksas, Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis, Minister of Environment Arūnas Kundrotas and other Lithuanian officials. The quests arrived under the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to send a mission to Lithuania and Russia. At the meetings, the experts underlined that the oil-drilling in the D-6 deposit in the Baltic Sea should not start till the common assessment of its effects to the surroundings was not carried out by the Lithuanian and Russian sides. The experts accentuated that all the issues should be solved by bilateral efforts of Lithuania and Russia.
