NORTH ATLANTIC COUNCIL VISITED LITHUANIAN-LED GHOR PROVINCIAL RECONSTRUCTION TEAM
On 5 October Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Linas Linkevičius in the North Atlantic Council delegation headed by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Sheffer visited Lithuanian-led Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team in Western Afghanistan.
The delegation aims to get acquainted with the course of NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation. The Chairman of NATO Military Committee Gen. Raymond Henault, ambassadors of the U.S., Denmark and the Netherlands, ISAF Commander Lt. Gen. Mauro del Vecchio arrived to Chagcharan in the delegation.
According to Ambassador Linas Linkevičius, he was surprised at the high hopes the people of Afghanistan put on the new Provincial Reconstruction Team.
“The expectations of the Ghor province people are extremely obliging. We were also impressed by Lithuanian representatives’ efforts not to disappoint the hopes of the local people. NATO Secretary General acknowledged this showing special attention to Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team with his exceptional visit,” Linas Linkevičius noticed.
The Ambassador admitted that he had an opportunity to see that further efforts are necessary to extend the Team’s activities and involve more people in it.
“Successful operation of the Team’s civilian component requires not only other states’ but also international organizations’ such as the EU, the United Nations, the G-8 support,” Ambassador Linas Linkevičius stated.
