NEW PARK DECORATED THE CAPITAL OF AFGHANISTAN’S GHOR PROVINCE, WHICH IS BEING RECONSTRUCTED AT INTERNATIONAL EFFORTS

On 31 March, a solemn opening ceremony of the new city park was held in Chaghcharan, the capital of Afghanistan’s Ghor province, the reconstruction of which is led by Lithuania.More than two thousand seedlings were planted in the park: apple trees, apricots, roses and thuja trees.

The twelfth Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-12) has actively contributed to the establishment of the park in cooperation with international partners. The acquisition of more than half of the seedlings was financed from the U.S. military fund Commanders Emergency Response Program.

The PRT-12 in Ghor has been able to use the finances of the fund since the beginning of this year, because the bilateral Lithuanian-U.S. police operational training and interaction group serves together with the Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghor.

Park in ChaghcharanTraditionally, the beginning of the New Year according to the Persian calendar is celebrated by planting trees and taking care of green spaces. Currently, the community of the Ghor province and its new administration are intensively taking care of the re-establishment of parks and are decorating the surroundings.

The opening ceremony of the park was attended by the Commander Colonel of the Lithuania-manned PRT-12 Remigijus Baltrūnas, soldiers of the Civilian - Military Cooperation (CIMIC) group, head of office of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency in Ghor province Kasim Alam, officers from the Afghan National Security Forces in Ghor and heads of the province’s departments, religious leaders (Mullahs) farmers, pupils, media representatives.

The Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghor is a joint civilian-military mission, a part of NATO’s International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) that was launched in Ghor in summer 2005. The main task of the mission is to help the Government of Afghanistan to extend authority in the province, ensure security and create appropriate conditions for provincial reconstruction. Representatives from Denmark, Georgia, Japan, the U.S.A., Poland, Finland and Ukraine serve along with the Lithuanian military and civilian personnel in Ghor PRT camp, Chaghcharan.
