NEW HEAD OF LITHUANIA’S SPECIAL MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN APPOINTED
On 2 February Birutė Abraitienė, a diplomat of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, left to Ghor province of Afghanistan to head Lithuanian Special Mission in Chagcharan.
Lithuanian Special Mission in Ghor province of Afghanistan established in July, 2005 not only represents Lithuania’s interests in Afghanistan, but also helps to restore the government, police and legal system of Ghor province.
In 2007 Lithuanian Government allocated 4 million litas (about 1,6 million euros) for development cooperation projects in Afghanistan. Lithuania also hopes to obtain finance from the European Commission that provided 10 million euros for the EU Members participating in the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
Military PRT mission is carried out by military forces, and civilian activities – by Lithuanian Special Mission, where officials from Foreign and Defense ministries as well as from the Police department are employed. They work together with diplomats from the U.S. and Iceland.
The Head of Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Mrs Abraitienė worked at Lithuanian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Department of Multilateral Relations of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, Lithuanian Seimas, newspaper “Lietuvos aidas“.
In July 2005 – May 2006 Lithuanian Special Mission was headed by Foreign Ministry diplomat Dainius Baublys and in June-December 2006 by Ambassador Gediminas Šerkšnys.
