On 9 February, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Algimantas Rimkūnas Foreign Ministry State Secretary.
Until this appointment A. Rimkūnas was Lithuanian Ambassador at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva. He was appointed to this office by Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus in December, 2000.
Doctor of Social Science A. Rimkūnas studied and worked at Vilnius University until 1992 and has been working in the Foreign Ministry since 1990.
In 1995-1996 A. Rimkūnas was Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, in 1996-2000 Foreign Vice-Minister.
Ambassador A. Rimkūnas led the successful negotiations on Lithuania’s accession to the World Trade Organization. In 2004 he was elected Vice-Chairman and Office Member of the UN Economic Commission for Europe. In the International Labour Organization, where Lithuania is a member of the Governing Body, A. Rimkūnas chaired the Committee on Sectoral and Technical Meetings.
