NEW AMBASSADOR OF LITHUANIA TO UNESCO PRESENTS LETTERS OF CREDENCE
On 3 December, the new Ambassador of Lithuania to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Arūnas Gelūnas presented his letters of credence to UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
After the official ceremony the Ambassador had a conversation with the UNESCO Director-General and briefed her on priorities for his term of office.
“Greater representation of Lithuania in intergovernmental committees of UNESCO is among our main priorities. I am convinced that Lithuania’s more active participation will help the country to increase its influence in the organization”, Gelūnas said.
Efforts will be taken to ensure the continuation of the old and the initiation of the new cultural and educational projects that are important for Lithuania.
The Ambassador informed Bokova that Lithuania will propose to include in UNESCO's list of commemorative dates the events that are significant to our country - the 300th birth anniversary of Kristijonas Donelaitis in 2014 and the 250th jubilee of the statesman and composer Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis (Michał Kleofas Ogiński) in 2015.
The UNESCO Director-General presented the on-going essential reform of UNESCO and the Ambassador promised to support it.
Lithuania became member of UNESCO in October 1991. Gelūnas is the third Lithuanian Ambassador to UNESCO after Ugnė Karvelis and Ina Marčiulionytė.
