Negotiations over Britain’s withdrawal from the EU result in moving medicines and banking bodies from London to European capitals
On 20 November, EU ministers secretly voted on the relocation of the UK-based EU agencies on the margins of the General Affairs Council (Art. 50) meeting in Brussels.
Amsterdam was chosen as the new location for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Paris for the European Banking Authority (EBA).
“I believe that today’s solution is in the best interests of the European Union as a whole. We hope that the London-based agencies will be relocated smoothly and that the continuity of their activities will be ensured, despite the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU,” said the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Zananavičius, who congratulated the competition winners.
16 EU member states competed to host the European Medicines Agency, while 8 offered to host the European Banking Authority.
