NATO’s security guarantee to members of the Alliance is unquestionable, high-ranking U.S. officials told L.Linkevičius

While continuing the working visit to the United States on 29 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius took part in the Atlantic Council’s conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the enlargement of the EU and NATO, and met with high-ranking U.S. officials to discuss security situation in Eastern Europe, the need to strengthen the region’s energy independence and to be better informed about inhabitants of Eastern Partnership countries, as well as advantages of rapprochement with Europe.

“Events in Ukraine have served as a warning. But how many times do we have to hear it to wake up?” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy asked a rhetorical question at a discussion, which was also attended by the United States Secretary of State John Kerry and EU Ministers.

During the meetings with Jake Sullivan, Vice President Joe Biden’s national security advisor, the Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Robert Menendez and other high-ranking U.S. officials, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister was reassured that NATO’s security guarantee to members of the Alliance was unquestionable.

The officials also stressed the important role of public diplomacy in effectively and objectively informing the Russian speaking population in Eastern Partnership countries.

L.Linkevičius also raised issues related to LNG export liberalisation and opening markets for products from Lithuania, stressing that this would be another very effective way to support Lithuania.
