NATO’S NEW STRATEGIC CONCEPT STRIKES A BALANCE BETWEEN VARIOUS FUNCTIONS AND INTERESTS OF MEMBER STATES, MFA’S POLITICAL DIRECTOR SAYS
On 1 December in Vilnius at the discussion of the results of NATO Summit in Lisbon, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Eitvydas Bajarūnas said that NATO’s new Strategic Concept stroke a balance between NATO’s various functions in different countries and interests of different member states.
“We think that this balance is good, because everyone can present it as a success story,” E.Bajarūnas said.The round-table discussion “NATO after Lisbon: Results and Perspectives” was also attended by Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Director of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science Ramūnas Vilpišauskas, Lithuania’s Ambassador to NATO Linas Linkevičius, and Robert G. Bell, Secretary of Defence Representative and Defence Advisor to the US Mission to NATO.
The event aimed to discuss the results of NATO’s Summit in Lisbon on 19-20 November and to review the recently adopted NATO’s new Strategic Concept, to analyze the development perspectives for the Alliance and the challenges that Lithuania faced due to the ongoing transformation of the organization.
The event was organized by the Institute of International Relations and Political Science in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was also supported by the NATO Public Diplomacy Division.
During the round-table discussion, the new book “Searching for NATO in Lithuania: Achievements, Failures, Perspectives” was presented. In this book, seventeen Lithuanian security and defence policy experts and practitioners analyze issues related to NATO and Lithuania’s efforts in this organization, revealing the main discussions and evaluating the experiences of the first years of the NATO membership.
