NATO’S AIR POLICING MISSION SETS THE BEST EXAMPLE OF SMART DEFENCE

On 10 January in Trakai, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, and discussed the agenda of the forthcoming 2014 NATO Summit to be held in September.

During the conversation, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the NATO Deputy Secretary General underlined that that NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltics set the best example of Smart Defence. The NATO Deputy Secretary General stressed that the forthcoming NATO Summit would discuss Smart Defence among other issues; however, it did not eliminate the need for maintaining rock solid defence funding.

At the forthcoming NATO Summit, according to L.Linkevičius, it is important to highlight the transatlantic ties and to ensure the visibility of NATO.

The NATO Deputy Secretary General is taking part in the ongoing Snow Meeting on 9 and 10 January in Trakai. Ambassador А.Vershbow took up his position in February 2012.
