NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO CONFIRM THE IMPORTANCE OF ALLIANCE’S OBLIGATIONS

On 5 September in Brussels Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Linas Linkevičius and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer discussed topical issues of NATO agenda.

During the meeting International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan, NATO cooperation with partners, reorganization of NATO forces and structures and other issues were talked over. The high officials also exchanged opinions on forthcoming NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Berlin and its possible results.

Commenting on the air-policing in Baltic States and perspectives of this NATO policy sphere NATO Secretary General expressed his determination to support the opinion that every NATO state’s airspace should be protected equally and complying with common standards.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer also paid attention to the fact that Alliance’s success depends on how separate Allies fulfil their defence planning and defence financing obligations. According to the Secretary General every NATO member allocating 2 percent of its national budget to defence gains full support of NATO leaders.

Lithuanian Ambassador Linas Linkevičius informed the Secretary General about the preparations for high-level NATO-Ukraine consultations taking place in Vilnius in October, where NATO Defence Ministers are invited to take part.
