MOLDOVA IS GRATEFUL FOR LITHUANIA’S SUPPORT
On 23 November Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Marian Lupu and his delegation, who are on a visit to Lithuania.
The participants of the meeting welcomed intensifying bilateral Lithuanian-Moldovan political cooperation, interparliamentary ties. Establishment of both countries’ diplomatic missions would also contribute to strengthening of bilateral cooperation. The Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament assured that next year Moldova planned to establish its embassy in Vilnius and welcomed Lithuania’s project to open its embassy in Moldova next year.
Marian Lupu assured that Moldova would concentrate efforts in order to implement necessary reforms and meet the Council’s of Europe commitments.
In discussion of the relations between Moldova and the European Union Lithuanian Foreign Minister welcomed the agreement of Moldovan parliamentary parties on foreign policy objectives. Minister Valionis assured that the assistance projects in Moldova would be continued and evolved.
Both countries took a favourable view of increasing EU interest in the problems of Moldovan region of Transnistria and also of the EU border mission in Ukraine and Moldova that starts next week. The Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament thanked Lithuania for active participation in putting up candidates for the mission and was pleased to know that the mission would include Lithuanian representatives. Both parties expressed hope that the EU border mission would give a new impetus to the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.
