MOLDOVA HOPES THAT LITHUANIA WILL HELP TO SETTLE THE PROTRACTED CONFLICT IN TRANSNISTRIA
On 3 January 2011, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis had a telephone conversation with Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Iurie Leancă. During the conversation, Minister I.Leancă congratulated Lithuania on assuming the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and expressed hope that the Chairmanship would be useful, successful and constructive.
The Foreign Minister of Moldova thanked Lithuania for its support to Moldova’s aspirations for European integration and its ongoing internal reforms, and said that he expected Lithuania to remain among Moldova’s most important friends and partners not only in the field of European integration, but also in resolving the Transnistrian conflict, drawing on the OSCE instruments.Lithuania intends to focus on re-launching the official negotiations regarding the Transnistrian conflict in the 5+2 format (Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, Russia, the OSCE, the U.S.A. and the European Union), also promoting the confidence building measures and other conflict resolution mechanisms.
A visit of Lithuanian Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Audronius Ažubalis to Moldova is scheduled in February this year.
