Mitkus and Gorčević discussed Montenegro's progress toward EU membership
On 17 September, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus met with Maida Gorčević, Montenegro’s Minister of European Affairs, visiting Lithuania. The meeting focused on Montenegro’s progress in the process of accession to the European Union (EU), the reforms being implemented in the country, and expectations regarding further integration.
Mitkus presented Lithuania’s priorities for its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2027 and emphasized that the EU’s enlargement will be one of the main priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency.
“Lithuania consistently supports a merit-based EU enlargement process. That is why we need to hear firsthand about the reforms underway in Montenegro, the progress made, and the country’s expectations,” said Mitkus.
Gorčević presented the country’s ambitious plans to conclude accession negotiations. Montenegro hopes to close all remaining negotiation chapters this year and become an EU member in 2028.
Montenegro began its EU accession negotiations in 2012. The country is currently one of the most advanced EU candidate countries in terms of the progress of negotiations.
In 2026, an ad hoc working group was established to draft the Accession Treaty with Montenegro.
During the visit to Lithuania, Gorčević also participated in meetings at the Seimas and the Office of the President.
