MINISTERS OF LITHUANIA AND FRANCE DISCUSSED BILATERAL PARTNERSHIP WITHIN THE EU AND NATO

On 24 February in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis met with French Secretary of State for European Affairs Pierre Lellouche to discuss key issues of the EU and international security.

During the meeting, the Minister emphasized close partnership between Lithuania and France, successful cooperation in various fields and thanked France for taking part in NATO’s air-policing mission in the Baltic States.

Minister A.Ažubalis also voiced the concern of Lithuania and other Baltic States over the piece of news about the possible selling of a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship to Russia.

“It is important to assure that the EU and NATO partners discuss such decisions in detail and beforehand,” Minister A.Ažubalis said.

P.Lellouche informed that France was currently holding talks with Russia about the possible selling of a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship, but the final agreement had not yet been reached. According to the Secretary of State, the deal would not present any threat to European security, because the ship would be sold without any weapons.

The Secretary of State assured that France aimed to comprehensively inform its partners within the EU and NATO on this issue, which was also illustrated by this visit to Lithuania and other Baltic States.
