Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the United Arab Emirates discussed the possibilities for strengthening bilateral cooperation

On 18 July, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Mr Linas Linkevičius and Mr Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who met at the meeting between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council states in Brussels, discussed bilateral relations and their development perspectives.

Mr Linkevičius expressed his delight with the positive cooperation trends in the areas of economy and tourism. In comparison with 2014, in 2015 Lithuanian exports to the United Arab Emirates increased by nearly three times, whereas the number of tourists that had come to Lithuania from the UAE has doubled.

In Lithuanian Minister’s opinion, a planned visit of the Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates together with a business delegation to Lithuania will strengthen economic ties between both countries even more. Mr Linkevičius expressed his hope that the Lithuanian Prime Minister’s visit to the UAE will take place in the near future. Mr Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan invited the head of Lithuanian diplomacy to attend the International Sir Bani Yas Forum on the matters in the Middle East to be held in the UAE this year.

Talking about bilateral international agreements subject to negotiations, Mr Linkevičius shared that Lithuania was in a position to sign an intergovernmental agreement on economic and technical cooperation and stressed it was important to Lithuania to have an agreement memorandum on the acknowledgement and replacement of driving licences signed with the United Arab Emirates.

Relevant international issues were also discussed at the meeting, including the situation in Ukraine, prevention of radicalism and security challenges.

Diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates were established on 16 October 1992.
