Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Latvia agree to establish the Balts’ Award

On the eve of the Balts’ Unity Day when Lithuanians and Latvians jointly commemorate the historic events of the Battle of Sun, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Latvia Mr. Linas Linkevičius and Mr. Edgars Rinkēvičs are pleased to announce the establishment of the Balts’ Award.

Minister Linas Linkevičius welcomed this common endeavour to bring the Balts closer by strengthening their mutual cultural links.  “We want to pay tribute to the people of Lithuania and Latvia for their creative activity, which makes our societies better acquainted with the art, literature, science and culture of the related neighbouring country”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

The first Balts’ Award will be symbolically presented in 2018 when both countries celebrate their centenaries. The award will be assigned for the promotion of Lithuanian and Latvian languages, literature, and historic research, to mention a few. The application will be open on the websites of Lithuanian and Latvian Ministries of Foreign Affairs in due time.
