MINISTERS CONTINUED THE DISCUSSION ON THE MAIN ISSUES OF FINANCIAL PERSPECTIVE

On 21 November during the European Union General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in Brussels the EU foreign ministers continued discussion on the EU Financial Perspective for 2007-2013.

The Council considered two main issues: the revenue and the timetable of budget expenditure reform.

The United Kingdom proposed to organize a ministerial meeting on 7 December, where the presidency intends to present comprehensive proposals for the budget negotiations.

During the meeting Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis noticed that the budget is necessary for implementation of planned EU reforms. EU citizens are also waiting for  the agreement on the budget.

“The presidency’s proposals should be submitted as soon as possible and should lead to the agreement. Now the UK holds all the cards,” Minister Valionis said.

In the GAERC meeting the ministers reconfirmed their determination to seek the budgetary framework to be agreed during the European Council meeting on 15 and 16 December.
