MINISTER V.UŠACKAS MET WITH MEXICAN, UKRAINIAN AND ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS IN MADRID
On 12 May at the 119th annual session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Madrid, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Mexican, Ukrainian and Armenian Foreign Ministers.
During the meeting with Mexico’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Espinosa, Minister V.Ušackas consulted about the intensification of the political and diplomatic cooperation between Lithuania and Mexico, discussed Mexico’s relations with the European Union and the situation in Cuba.
The Ministers agreed to cooperate in deepening the knowledge of Latin America of the Lithuanian diplomats, while Lithuania is getting ready for its EU Presidency.
During the meeting with Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Khandogiy, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister welcomed Ukraine’s negotiations with the EU on the free trade agreement.
The Minister asked the Ukrainian Government to lift the customs limitations for the export of Lithuanian-made refrigerators to Ukraine as soon as possible.
“We have to solve the economic crisis by applying not protectionist and discriminatory duties, but the tools that promote trade,” stressed V.Ušackas.
Heads of the Lithuanian and Ukrainian diplomacy also discussed the Eastern Partnership initiative, which was recently launched. Ukraine requested Lithuania’s support in seeking for a greater visibility of the EU activity in the Crimea.
Lithuania’s Minister informed about the projects that are planned in the Crimea and the Lithuanian Days that will take place on 22-23 May. V.Ušackas also highlighted that Lithuania would support the Czech initiative to open a European Union Information Centre in Simferopol.
At the meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Armenia Edward Nalbandian, V.Ušackas emphasized that from 1 July of this year Lithuania would represent the European Union in Armenia. According to the Minister, Lithuania will support closer relations between Armenia and the EU, as well as the participation of this country in the Eastern Partnership initiative.
