MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS SUPPORTED MACEDONIAN ASPIRATION FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE EU AND NATO
On 29-30 August during the official visit to Macedonia Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas spoke in support of Macedonia’s aspiration for membership in the EU and NATO. “Lithuania is ready to become an active ally of Macedonia and its genuine advisor in striving for membership in the EU and NATO,” said the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy during the meeting with Macedonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Milošoski.
P.Vaitiekūnas named areas, in which Lithuanian experts could consult Macedonia on its path to the EU and indicated that Lithuania was also ready to cooperate with Macedonia in Brussels actively. The Minister also stressed that purposeful reforms in Macedonia were very important for further development of the relations between Macedonia and the EU.
During the meetings with President of Macedonia Branko Crvenkovski, Parliament Speaker Ljubisa Georgievski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy emphasized the growing interest of Lithuanian businessmen in the investment environment in Macedonia, which is testified by the delegation of businessmen accompanying the minister during the visit.
The issues of bilateral cooperation perspectives, Lithuania’s ambition of presiding over the OSCE, regional cooperation and the situation in the Western Balkan region were also discussed during the meetings.
Macedonian representatives thanked Lithuanian Government for giving support to Macedonia fighting the fires.
Lithuanian and Macedonian Ministers of Foreign Affairs signed an Agreement for the avoidance of double taxation of income and capital. This is the first bilateral intergovernmental agreement between Lithuania and Macedonia.
“I trust that this agreement will open new markets to our businessmen,” said Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas.
