MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: NATO COUNTRIES OUGHT TO RALLY SUPPORT FOR GEORGIA’S EURO-ATLANTIC GOALS
On 25 June in Warsaw, during the meeting of The New Group of Georgia’s Friends, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and his colleagues from Georgia, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic and Sweden discussed measures for accelerating Georgia’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures. During the meeting, Ministers discussed specific ways to forward Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration. There were discussions about possibilities for the involvement of the European Union in resolving the Abkhazian conflict.
Considering the issue of NATO’s Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Georgia, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas indicated the importance of an active role of the NATO countries.
‘Time remaining until the upcoming NATO’s ministerial meeting in December has to be spent to create a strategy and to take up active steps in mobilising the support of the NATO countries for the Georgia’s goals to become a member of the Alliance ,’ said Minister P.Vaitiekūnas.
Participants of the meeting expressed concern over the increasing tension in Abkhazia and emphasized the necessity of peaceful conflict regulation and the importance of a dialogue.
A joint communiqué was issued during the meeting.
The New Group of Georgia’s Friends was established in 2005 at Georgia’s initiative. The previous meeting of this group took place in September, 2007 in Vilnius.
