MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MET WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR

On 19 September Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance who was visiting Lithuania. Special Rapporteur informed about his visit during which he met with the representatives from state institutions and nongovernmental organizations. D.Diène noted that Lithuania had a good legal framework and mechanisms to implement it. He also emphasized the need to acknowledge more widely occasional cases of discrimination and to prepare better for possible tensions in society.

The Minister said that Lithuania was preparing for the challenges of globalization and noted the importance of developing the culture of tolerance.

„Tradition, sensitiveness and motivation have to become the main instruments in this area“- Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas said.

It is planned to present the report of Special Rapporteur on the situation in Lithuania fighting against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance to the UN Commission on Human Rights in March 2008.
