MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONTINUES SERIES OF BILATERAL MEETINGS AT THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 25 September, during the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and Chief Negotiator for the European Union membership Ali Babacan.

“Lithuania regards Turkey as an important and strategic partner for cooperation in the area of energy,” said the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his support for Turkey’s accession negotiations with the European Union.

“I trust that the new Government of Turkey will actively start the necessary reforms in order to comply with the EU accession requirements,” stated P.Vaitiekūnas.

The Ministers discussed Lithuanian and Turkish aspirations to cooperate in implementing the project of combined train “Viking”. Important issues of bilateral economy cooperation and NATO, the Cyprus question were also discussed.

During the meeting the Ministers discussed Turkey’s participation in the upcoming Vilnius Energy Security Conference 2007.

The upcoming conference which will be held on 10-11 October was presented to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey. The representative of Turkey assured that his country would be represented in the forum at the highest possible level.

During the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas also talked with Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt. The Ministers discussed the idea of Lithuania to promote regional cooperation between the Baltic, Nordic and Central Asian countries.

On 25 September, at the United Nations General Assembly, P.Vaitiekūnas met with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

P.Vaitiekūnas emphasized good bilateral cooperation in the area of transport and communications and thanked Vietnam for its support regarding the decision to organize the meeting of Asian and European Ministers of Transport (ASEM) in Vilnius in 2009.

The Minister also drew attention to the growing number of Lithuanian tourists in Vietnam and asked for Vietnam’s help to find a candidate for the post of Lithuanian Honorary Consul in Vietnam.

P.Vaitiekūnas is also planning to meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Luis Amado and to discuss the important issues of the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU and Russia.
