MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONGRATULATES LITHUANIAN JEWISH SPORTS CLUB “MAKABI” ON THE OCCASION OF TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF RE-ESTABLISHMENT
On 20 February, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas congratulated Lithuanian Jewish Sports Club “Makabi” on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of its re-establishment.
„I wish you personally and to all members of the “Makabi” sports club the same inexhaustible enthusiasm and energy, that the “Makabi” sports club showed after the restoration of the independence of Lithuania, wrote the Minister in a congratulations letter to President of the Club Semionas Finkelšteinas.
According to the Minister, the merits of the “Makabi” sports club in promoting Lithuania’s name in the world are exceptional.
"In 1989, Lithuanian tricolour flown in Tel Aviv during the world Maccabi Games, was not only an act of civil courage, but also a symbol of the fight for freedom, that the Jewish and Lithuanian people were aiming at shoulder-to-shoulder for many decades of Soviet oppression", says Minister V.Ušackas in his letter.
The Minister also expressed his belief that the victories of Lithuanian Jewish Sports Club “Makabi” would continue to promote the name of Lithuania. The activities of the club, according to the Minister, make a significant impact not only to the public life of Lithuanian Jewish community, but also to the all sports of Lithuania.
“I wish the best of luck to the Lithuanian “Makabi” sports club athletes during the forthcoming XVIII World Maccabi Games, from where, I am sure, they will return highly awarded", wrote Minister V.Ušackas.
