Minister Linkevičius: ‘Opening of power bridges NordBalt and LitPol Link is a turning point in Baltic region's energy situation

The opening of the power bridges NordBalt and LitPol Link between Lithuania and Sweden, and Lithuania and Poland on 14 December is another important step towards greater energy independence of Lithuania and other Baltic States.

Lithuania, which successfully implemented the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Klaipėda last year and, thus, factually broke its dependence on a sole gas provider, this year continued to move successfully towards energy independence: today even two electricity links between Lithuania and Europe are inaugurated for the first time ever. The power bridge with Poland LitPol Link connects the energy systems of Lithuania and other Baltic States with the electricity systems and the market of other West European countries, while the NordBalt power interconnection opens the way to the Scandinavian electricity market.

“In order to essentially reinforce our energy security, we must not only build power links with Sweden and Poland, but also to ensure the synchronisation of our electricity systems with Western Europe. It is not acceptable that the electricity systems of members of the EU and NATO should be operated from the dispatch centre in Moscow. We shall continue our work of eliminating energy islands and achieving energy independence,” stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius.

The implementation of the NordBalt and LitPol Link projects sets an important example of close cooperation among Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Latvia, and Estonia. Common objectives and joint projects allow our region to become more secure and energy independent. It is also worth noting that the new power bridges will provide a possibility for Lithuanian consumers and businesses to get cheaper electricity, especially from Northern European countries.
