Minister Linkevičius congratulated the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany

On January 27, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius extended his congratulations to Sigmar Gabriel, the new Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, on his appointment. In the letter of congratulations Linkevičius emphasised the importance of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Germany, as well as close political, economic and cultural links.

According to Minister Linkevičius, Germany made a major contribution in ensuring security in the region and the Baltic States. The Minister thanked Germany for its commitment to participation in NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic States and the decision to assume the role of framework nation in forming multinational forces in Lithuania.

Linkevičius also invited Minister Gabriel to pay a visit to Lithuania in the near future.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, resigned on 27 January 2017. On the same day this post was filled by the former Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel.
