Minister L. Linkevičius congratulates Italy on its Republic Day
On 2 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius congratulated the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio and the people of Italy on the national holiday – the Republic Day.
L. Linkevičius welcomed the fact that Italy was already recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. “I believe that we will continue to work together to overcome the European and transatlantic challenges of today,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister wrote in the letter to his Italian counterpart.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also underlined that Lithuania and Italy enjoyed close bilateral relations in the political, security, defence, business and cultural fields. In addition, L. Linkevičius thanked Italy for its contribution to enhancing the security of Lithuania and of the whole Baltic region. The Italian forces will conduct NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission from the Lithuanian Air Force Air Base in Šiauliai this autumn.
The Republic Day is a major national holiday in the country. The Italian Republic was founded upon the abolition of the monarchy by way of a referendum on 2 June 1946.
