Minister Budrys: We must relentlessly oppose any manifestations of hatred and violence
Today, 30 January, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys participated in the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Minister emphasized that on this day, we should not only remember and honour all the victims of the Holocaust but also resolutely and collectively oppose any forms of hatred and violence.
"A tragedy of this scale should have ingrained a lasting memory in humanity’s DNA, ensuring that it never recurred. Therefore, it is our shared responsibility to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and to ensure that the darkest moments of history are never repeated," said Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys.
The Lithuanian Jewish community, diplomats, and other guests attended the event. The Ambassador of Israel to Lithuania, Hadas Wittenberg Silverstein, also addressed the audience.
An exhibition of posters from the Vilnius Ghetto Theatre, prepared by the Vilnius Gaon Museum of Jewish History, was opened during the event. The touching memoirs of Holocaust survivor and theatre scholar Dr Markas Petuchauskas, who wrote about ghetto theatre and the active musical life of the Vilnius Ghetto as a form of spiritual resistance, were also read.
In 2005, on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, the United Nations proclaimed 27 January as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
