Minister Budrys: Resilient societies that are well prepared to counter threats are an important deterrent
On 24 June, Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, who was attending the NATO summit in The Hague, joined Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna in a public diplomacy forum discussion entitled “Making our Societies more Robust, Ready and Resilient.”
In his speech, the minister emphasized the need to strengthen society's preparedness for crises, increase defense industry capabilities, and ensure credible deterrence, which is essential for peace in Europe.
"If we want peace, we must invest in credible deterrence, which is the only way forward. We must ensure that our region's defense plans are backed up by real capabilities. This means investment, expansion of production capabilities, contracts, and we must do this now," said Budrys.
The minister emphasized that modern threats are not necessarily physical or military: “Disinformation, hybrid attacks, and attempts to divide societies are realities we are already facing. In Lithuania, this has strongly mobilized civil society and prompted it to prepare more actively to counter possible threats,” said the Lithuanian foreign minister.
According to the minister, it is necessary to act now, involving business and the defense industry in defense preparedness, for which all the necessary instruments, plans, and initiatives are in place at both the European Union and transatlantic levels.
