Minister Budrys in Israel: it is necessary to pursue lasting peace in the Middle East

Kęstutis Budrys, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is on a working visit to Israel on 16-17 June. On Tuesday, Lithuania's head of diplomacy met with the country's Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar.

During the visit, the Minister underlined the strategic importance of bilateral relations.

"Lithuania sees Israel as an important partner in the area of security and defence. Even if our views sometimes differ, the direction of bilateral cooperation is clear – partnership, dialogue, and respect," said the Minister.

When speaking about economic cooperation, Budrys highlighted the potential for collaboration with Israel in business and innovation. According to the Minister, Israel is an attractive innovation and export market for Lithuania, and we are interested in strengthening  technological cooperation, promoting investment, and creating new partnerships.

Lithuanian and Israeli Foreign Ministers discussed the security situation in the region. Budrys emphasized that Lithuania supports Israel's right to defend itself in accordance with the principles of international humanitarian law and human rights. As regards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Minister stressed the need for lasting peace.

"Only the full implementation of international agreements and the comprehensive plan for the future of Gaza can ensure sustainable peace. The demilitarisation of Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas are essential," Budrys said.

The Minister also expressed concern about the situation in the West Bank. The head of Lithuania's diplomacy emphasized that the deteriorating situation, the increase in violence, and the expansion of settlements create additional tensions and complicate the prospects for peace.

Ministers also discussed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Budrys called on Israel to play a more active role in supporting Ukraine, especially in strengthening air defence capabilities.
