Minister Budrys: “Defence cooperation between Lithuania and Germany is an example to follow for allies”

On 15 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, received the Ambassador of Germany to Lithuania, Dr. Cornelius Zimmermann.

During the meeting, discussion focused on bilateral cooperation, regional security and defence, as well as on support for Ukraine.

Budrys emphasized that the deployment of the German brigade to Lithuania by 2027 is a priority for the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.

“The German brigade in Lithuania is our priority. We appreciate Germany’s leadership in strengthening the security of NATO’s eastern flank and its unwavering commitment to collective defence. Lithuania will make every effort to create the best conditions for the German brigade members and their families in Lithuania. Defence cooperation between Lithuania and Germany is an example to follow for allies,” the Foreign Minister said.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy expressed appreciation for the close bilateral relationship between Lithuania and Germany, underlining that Lithuania was keen to further develop political, business, educational, and cultural cooperation with Germany.

Budrys noted that it was necessary to continue mobilizing all kinds of support for Ukraine and stressed the importance of German leadership in this regard. According to the Foreign Minister, 2025 will be decisive in Russia’s war against Ukraine, and it is important for the West to demonstrate a long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine, use sanctions to stop Russia’s war machine, and to ensure Russia’s accountability.

German Ambassador, Dr. C. Zimmermann, presented his letters of credence to the President of the Republic of Lithuania on 28 August 2023.
