On 26 August, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis attended a meeting of Nordic-Baltic Foreign ministers in Tallinn.
At the meeting, Minister Valionis noted that the Nordic-Baltic cooperation is an excellent example of regional cooperation in Europe. “On the Baltic countries having become EU and NATO members, we should develop a qualitatively new Nordic-Baltic cooperation, which will allow to safeguard the common interest of the region within an enlarged European Union and will create conditions for better coordination and implementation of the common policy of the EU and its members,” the Minister stated.
Minister Valionis emphasised that Lithuania supported the Danish Prime Minister’s position, which held that the EU must not miss the historic opportunity of concluding EU entry talks by the end of 2002.
The head of Lithuanian diplomacy also stressed that Lithuania was ready to participate in the discussion on the Kaliningrad Region in order to find a flexible solution facilitating movement of people from and to the Kaliningrad Region.
