MFA’S STATEMENT ON UN SECURITY COUNCIL’S RESOLUTION THAT DEMANDS ELIMINATION OF SYRIA’S CHEMICAL WEAPONS
Lithuania welcomes a unanimous adoption on 27 September of the U.N. Security Council’s Resolution 2118 that demands the elimination of Syria’s chemical weapons and determines that the use of chemical weapons constitutes a threat to international peace and security, condemning the use of chemical weapons on 21 August in Syria.
The resolution approves the decision of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons setting down special procedures for expeditious destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons program and stringent verification thereof.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania particularly values the Resolution’s provision that underlines the importance of a political process in accordance with the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and calls for holding an international conference on Syria.
The U.N. Security Council’s unanimous decision is a significant step towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict which has entered its third year and has claimed tens of thousands of lives as well as caused a major humanitarian crisis in the region.
We call on all parties engaged in the conflict to facilitate the implementation of the U.N. Security Council’s Resolution, to comply with international humanitarian law and to ensure safe provision of humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians as well as to refugees in neighbouring countries.
