MFA STATEMENT ON THE TRIAL OF THE BELARUSIAN HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER
The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses profound disappointed at the pathetic decision taken by the Minsk city court to reject the appeal of the human rights defender Aliaksandr Bialiatski, who was convicted and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in an enhanced regime detention camp.
This politically motivated decision taken by the court demonstrates that Belarus has chosen to damage its relations with the EU and stepped on the path of further self-isolation.Lithuania supports the statement of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, the Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore, who urges Belarus to immediately release Bialiatski and all other civil society activists, and political opponents.
