MFA Statement on the Agreement on the Iranian Nuclear Program

Lithuania welcomes the agreement for long-term comprehensive solution on the Iranian nuclear program signed by the United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia, France, Germany and Iran. We applaud the intensive diplomatic efforts led by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, based on the mandate received from the UN Security Council, which made this agreement possible. Full implementation of this Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action will positively contribute to regional and international peace and security.

Under specifics of this agreement Iran will restrict its nuclear capacity in exchange for the phased-in lifting of nuclear-related sanctions imposed by the UN, EU and the US, subject to Iran‘s steps to implement the deal. Iran also has agreed to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor the provisions of the agreement.

International community will have to remain vigilant and in a strong position to verify that Iran upholds its pledge not to produce nuclear weapons and to convert its nuclear capacity into areas of research.
