MFA STATE SECRETARY VISITS BERLIN TO CONSULT ON CLOSER COOPERATION AND GERMAN ASSISTANCE

State Secretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Evaldas Ignatavičius visited Berlin and consulted representatives of the German MFA and Bundestag on closer cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the both countries and on German assistance in training Lithuanian experts for work in the structures of the European Union (EU). On 2 April, MFA State Secretary Ignatavičius met with State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office Dr. Klaus Scharioth, Chief Officer of the Foreign Office in charge of the EU Enlargement Dr. Christoph Jessen and Chair of the Bundestag Group of Baltic-German Inter-Parliamentary Relations Dr. Christel Happach-Kasan. During the meetings, the officials exchanged their views on cooperation in the region. The German representatives were interested in Lithuania’s preparations for the referendum on EU accession, they also discussed the possibility of holding a meeting of foreign ministers of the three Baltic countries and Germany in Vilnius in May this year. Other issues discussed during the consultations were Lithuanian-German bilateral relations, the Kaliningrad transit, the European Convention, the initiatives of “a Wider Europe” and “New Neighbours”.
