Memory of Holocaust victims in Lithuania honoured in Tel Aviv

On 28 April, a commemoration ceremony to honour Holocaust victims in Lithuania was held at the Tel Aviv Kiriat Shaul Cemetery memorial. The commemoration was organized by the Association of Jews from Vilna and Vicinity in Israel – Beit Vilna.

The solemn commemoration was attended by Holocaust survivors, their families, representatives of the Israel Defence Forces and scouting organizations cooperating with Beit Vilna and Lithuanian Ambassador Darius Degutis.

Ambassador D.Degutis paid tribute to those who perished during the Holocaust. He stressed the importance of remembering and honouring painful and tragic pages of Lithuanian history. He also highlighted the dedication of Lithuania and its people to build future Lithuanian-Jewish relations based on mutual trust and goodwill.

D.Degutis spoke about the ongoing commemoration events in Lithuania, including a Righteous Among the Nations awarding ceremony which was held at the Government building and attended by the Prime Minister A.Butkevičius. Ambassador D.Degutis noted that the Lithuanian Government paid special attention to the awareness of commemoration of the Holocaust memory in Lithuania and preservation of history and cultural heritage of Lithuanian Jews.
