On 20 August, Linas Linkevičius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Johann Spitzer, the new Austrian ambassador, and discussed prospects of strengthening of bilateral relations and cooperation in international organisations. The head of Lithuanian diplomacy has stressed improved bilateral economic and cultural cooperation as well and significant potential for further development of  bilateral relations.

Minister also expressed his gratitude to Austria for its support to Lithuania in its efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2014–2015.

Today, Ambassador Spitzer has presented his letters of credence to Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania. He is the fifth Austrian diplomatic representative in Vilnius since the restoration of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Austria.

In 2012, the Lithuanian-Austrian trade turnover amounted to 847.8 million litas, and, compared to 2011, Lithuanian exports to Austria increased by 8.2 per cent while imports increased by 12.1 per cent.
