MEETING OF SENIOR OFFICERS OF THE UNION FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN IS HELD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LITHUANIA

For the first time in the Nordic and Baltic countries, Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council holds a Meeting of the Senior Officers of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on 3-4 October. The meeting will discuss issues important for the EU’s southern neighbours.

The Union for the Mediterranean along with the Eastern Partnership, a priority item on the Lithuanian Presidency’s agenda, is an integral part of the European Neighbourhood Policy aimed at promoting growth and stability in Europe’s Southern Neighbourhood. 28 Member States of the European Union and 15 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area, including the Western Balkans, North Africa and Middle East, are participating in this initiative.

During the meetings in Vilnius, representatives of 42 countries, including Member States of the EU, the Arab League and the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, will discuss the most important regional issues. Special attention will be given to the political crisis in Tunisia and Egypt, and the ongoing military conflict in Syria.

Representatives of participating countries and international organizations will assess outcomes of the Union for the Mediterranean Conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society, which was held in Paris, and will discuss preparations for the UfM ministerial meetings on energy and transport. The UfM Secretariat will present the implementation of infrastructural and environmental projects, and will acquaint with new projects and funding opportunities.

A Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue Between Cultures will also take place on 4 October. The meeting will endorse the annual program of activities, upgrade guidelines for the submission of applications, and will discuss the Foundation’s Activity Strategy.
