Lithuania’s Vice-Minister took part in the high level event on contributions of women, youth and civil society to the post-2015 development agenda

March 6, New York. “Through our history we have learned that citizens’ collective action can make a difference and help achieve significant outcomes. Civil society is an indispensable power and an independent actor of the development process”, - said Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Neris Germanas speaking at the high level event of the United Nations General Assembly on the contributions of women, the young and civil society to the post-2015 development agenda.

The Vice-Minister emphasized the important role strong local neighborhoods can play in addressing the most relevant issues and noted that the legitimization of local neighborhoods as the stand-alone administrative units could be an important step towards citizen empowerment for their present and future.

According to Vice-Minister Germanas, the empowerment of women has an immense domino effect for the advancement of a society. He stressed that gender equality and women empowerment shall be clearly featured on the post 2015 agenda and be a stand-alone sustainable development goal.

The Vice-Minister also presented Lithuania’s youth policy that focuses on the principles of self-governance, independence and voluntariness.

The event was organized to encourage the global community to work toward building consensus and elaborating concrete action for the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

During his visit in New York Vice-Minister Germanas met with Ukraine‘s Permanent Representative Yuriy A. Sergeyev to the UN and Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco. He will also take part in the launching event of the campaign „Children-not soldiers“ and UN Security Council debate on Children and Armed Conflicts.
