LITHUANIA’S POSITION ON SITUATION IN GEORGIA

Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes peaceful solution of the post-election confrontation in Georgia. We hope Georgia will be able to pass this serious test for its democracy and progress rapidly towards creation of the solid democratic society.

We welcome the statement of Nino Burjanadze, acting President of Georgia, on continuation of Georgia’s foreign policy direction, including further integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures, good relation with neighbouring countries and development of its dialogue with Russia.

Lithuania expects that the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections will be free and fair, will reflect the will of Georgian people and restore a climate of trust and confidence in the country.

Lithuania is ready to provide assistance to the new authorities of Georgia and continue sharing our experience in various fields of reform as well as EU and NATO integration.

We hope that Georgia will remain a stable democratic state with a very important role in building security and stability in the region of the Southern Caucasus.

Lithuania is in favor of a more active position of the European Union on the Southern Caucasus. We expect the European Union’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus to play a visible role in establishing a comprehensive position of the European Union as regards the new situation in Georgia. In this regard we welcome the visit of Ambassador Heikki Talvitie, the EU Special Representative, to Tbilisi.

As the acceding country, Lithuania aligned itself with the statements of the European Union on the situation in Georgia.
