LITHUANIA’S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE EU HELD A MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL

On 11 January, Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the European Union, Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis met with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and acquainted him with Lithuania’s expectations for the European Council summit on energy and innovation issues, scheduled on 4 February 2011. Ambassador R.Karoblis noted that the European Union’s ambitious efforts to integrate energy grids of the Baltic States into a single EU’s internal market were very significant.

The Lithuanian diplomat and the President of the European Council also discussed the European Union’s reaction to the situation in Belarus.

Ambassador R.Karoblis presented to H.Van Rompuy the original letter of the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė regarding the facilitation of the Schengen visa issuance procedures for the citizens of Belarus.

At the meeting, Lithuania’s preparation for holding the Presidency of the European Union in 2013 was also discussed.

On 1 January 2010, H.Van Rompuy took office as the first permanent President of the European Council. The position was created by the Treaty of Lisbon.
