LITHUANIA’S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE IN GENEVA: IT IS NECESSARY TO FIGHT AGAINST RACISM AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
At the Durban Review Conference against racism on 22 April, Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Eduardas Borisovas confirmed once again Lithuania’s aim to fight against racism and racial discrimination.
Ambassador E.Borisovas said that the speech given by President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 20 April did not correspond to the objectives of the conference and did not contribute to the promotion of tolerance. The ambassador noted that such actions complicated the efforts of international community to fight against racism.
“It is of utmost importance that all the states respect international standards in their fight against racism. The freedom of religion can not be a reason to disregard freedom of expression and opinion. Unequal treatment of the victims of racism cannot be tolerated”, Ambassador E.Borisovas stressed.
On 21 April, the Durban Review Conference against racism adopted by consensus the outcome document, which reviewed the situation of the fight against racism in the world and set guidelines for improving the situation in this field.
22 member states of the European Union take part in the conference in Geneva which concludes its work on 24 April.
