LITHUANIA’S OUTGOING LONG-TERM HONORARY CONSUL IN GERMANY IS AWARDED THE MEDAL OF HONOUR
Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis, who is paying a visit to Berlin on 15 April, awarded the Foreign Ministry’s medal of honour - Lithuanian Diplomacy Star - to Lithuania’s outgoing long-term Honorary Consul in Germany Hans Friedrich Saure.During the ceremony at the Lithuanian Embassy in Germany, Minister A.Ažubalis thanked H.F.Saure, whose status as an Honorary Consul was terminated on 1 April, for many years of service promoting the name of Lithuania in the German Federal States of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The Minister stressed that the assistance of Lithuanian Honorary Consuls in finding useful business contacts and in maintaining contact with Lithuanians living abroad was particularly important for Lithuanian citizens.H.F.Saure took office as a Lithuanian Honorary Consul in 1998 and immediately initiated the coming of the first German bank Nord LB to Lithuania. He also helped to set up the office of the then Lithuanian Development Agency (LDA) in Hamburg.
H.F.Saure also actively cooperated with representatives of the Lithuanian community in Hamburg, consistently supported the Lithuanian 16 February Gymnasium and the Lithuanian Cultural Institute in Lampertheim-Hüttenfeld.
Currently, there are six Lithuanian Honorary Consuls in Germany. The most recent one - Benjamin Johannes Wittstock - took office in Munich at the end of March this year.
Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and Lithuanian Embassy in Germany have already initiated the procedures to appoint a new honorary consul in the German Federal States of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
