LITHUANIA’S MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS POINTS TO THE OBSTACLES THAT THE LITHUANIAN BUSINESS FACES IN SERBIA

On 26 January in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Vuk Jeremić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia.

V.Ušackas drew attention of Foreign Minister of Serbia to the hardships, which Lithuanian companies face after investing in Serbia.

“Transparent business environment is one of the most important requirements for the countries that seek EU membership,” said head of the Lithuanian diplomacy.

In 2006, Lithuanian companies Arvi and Sanitex privatised a nitric fertilizer producer in Serbia. Recently, a controversy arose between the investors and the Serbian authorities regarding implementation of privatisation conditions. Minister V.Ušackas urged the Serbian Government to solve the conflict through a transparent and a benevolent dialogue of the investors and the Serbian authorities.

During the meeting, the reforms that are underway in Serbia, cooperation between Serbia and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Serbia’s integration into the European Union were also discussed.

On 1 July 2008, direct investments of Lithuania into Serbia amounted to 124.4 million Litas.
